POP3 vs IMAP — What's the Difference?

✓ IMAP — Recommended

IMAP

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is an advanced protocol for receiving email. Emails are stored on the mail server and your device simply downloads a copy — the original always stays on the server.

The main advantage of IMAP over POP3 is the ability to access the same account from multiple locations. If your phone is lost or broken, your emails are safe — just set up the account on a new device and everything is there.

IMAP keeps all your devices — phone, laptop, tablet — perfectly in sync at all times.

POP3

POP3

POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) downloads emails from the mail server directly to your device and removes them from the server entirely.

This means if you check email on your phone using POP3, those emails are downloaded to the phone and deleted from the server. If you then check on your computer or webmail, there will be nothing to see — the emails are only on the phone.

POP3 is only suitable if you use a single device and want to store email locally.

💡
Our Recommendation

We recommend using IMAP for most users — it keeps your emails safe and synced across all your devices. For Kwikweb domains use mail.your-domain.co.za with SMTP port 587 and authentication enabled.
