Common IMAP Problems in New Outlook (2025–2026)

Reported by users and community forums worldwide

  • ☁️
Cloud Proxy Sync Architecture New Outlook routes IMAP connections through Microsoft's cloud servers instead of connecting directly — causing compatibility problems with non-Microsoft or custom IMAP providers like Kwikweb.
  • 🔄
Incomplete or Delayed Synchronisation New emails are delayed, and deletions or folder moves don't reflect correctly on the server or webmail.
  • Account Setup Failures Stuck on syncing during account setup, or manual configuration is difficult or impossible to complete.
  • 🔒
Frequent Password Prompts & Sending Errors Repeated requests to re-enter your password, or emails failing to send unexpectedly.
  • 📁
Limited Advanced IMAP Features Custom folder paths, server-side rules, and other advanced IMAP settings are not fully supported.

How to Switch Back to Classic Outlook

Follow these steps to restore reliable IMAP email

  • 1

Open New Outlook on your Windows PC.

  • 2

Look for the Try the New Outlook or New Outlook toggle in the top-right corner.

  • 3

Turn the toggle off — Outlook will restart automatically in Classic mode.

  • 4

You may need to re-add your IMAP accounts in Classic Outlook — it connects directly and handles them reliably.

🔍 If the toggle is missing (common in some updates)

  • Search for "Outlook" in the Windows Start menu — you'll often see separate icons for Outlook (new) and Outlook (classic). Launch the classic version directly.

  • In some versions: Go to Help > Revert to Legacy Outlook.

  • Both versions can coexist on your PC — you can test IMAP in Classic without losing access to New Outlook.

💡

Community recommendation: As of late 2025 and into 2026, most users and community reports recommend sticking with Classic Outlook for reliable IMAP use. Microsoft is making New Outlook the default for more users from January 2026 — but Classic Outlook remains fully available and supported.
